Charismatic Gadeshwar

Gadeshwar dam with Matheran in background

Not far from the Navi Mumbai city confines lies Panvel. A well developed town in itself fringed on all sides with natural beauty. A left turn before the Panvel ST depot on the Mumbai-Panvel highway leads you to a land less explored. The human development starts receding, opening way to the greener pastures. A meandering river crosses our path and we leave behind couple of beautiful villages reaching the dead- end-Dudhani village. The base of Matheran. Gadeshwar dam flaunts jaw dropping landscapes.

Gadeshwar Dam is nestled between Matheran, Peb, Mhaismal and Chanderi hills. Gadeshwar dam is a small dam and known to less people.Gadeshwar is known picnic spot amongst localites. A very scenic place, lined by velvety paddy fields and green hills. The clouds come stooping low adding drama to these hills. The river is intersected by bridges which have beautiful hilly backdrops.

Gadeshwar remains closed or under tight security on weekends in monsoon to avoid accidents. The last time we had been on weekend, we were turned away by security. Weekdays are the best time to be here.

Gadeshwar Dam is around 8 kms. from Panvel town. If travelling by public transport get down at Panvel ST Depot and take a 6-seater to Gadeshwar Dam. If travelling by own vehicle take the left turn before Panvel ST Depot and go to dead-end.

On the way
Matheran’s Sunset point can be reached by a mere 1.5 hours climb from Dudhani village. One can drench in the dam water or take a dip in the river. Even if the dam is not accessible, one cannot go empty handed with the sights that greet you.
